twitter - andy mThe Mayor of Dudley borough has taken on the role of Volunteering Champion for the borough since 2009 and helps to promote, and recognise amazing local volunteers who give their time to help local people and communities.

On 27th May we welcomed the new Mayor of Dudley, who is also the first Muslim Mayor, Cllr Mohammed Hanif into this important role.

We started the day at Lye Community Centre, where the Mayor and Mayoress, Mrs. Zabeda Khanam, joined the former Mayor and Mayoress, Steve and Jayne Waltho, Temporary Chief Superintendent Richard Fisher – West Midlands Police, Diane McNulty – Consultant in Public Health at DMBC, Jayne Emery – Chief Officer of Healthwatch Dudley and Andy Mullaney – Dudley’s BITC Business Connector, aboard a minibus for visits to two local charities.

Image-1First stop was Mary Stevens Hospice, where they were greeted by Charlotte Schofield, Lottery Manager, who told us about the history of the Hospice and some interesting facts, including sharing the exciting plans to develop the building and support even more patients, and their families.  The Mayor and guests then toured the Hospice, meeting staff, volunteers and patients.

hwdudleyNext we visited the What? Centre in Stourbridge and learnt about the range of services they provide to local young people, hearing about the huge difference their volunteer counsellors make.  Visitors enjoyed a tour of the building and had an opportunity to chat to staff, and volunteers.

msh facebookIt was then back on the bus for the return trip to Lye Community Centre and a marketplace of local voluntary, and community groups, who support people from the local area.  These included: DIYYA, Direxions, Lye Community Project, Tandrusti, Reaching For Change (Romania Community), Diverse Support, For Men Monday Club, Lye Community Centre and Creative Support.  We were also joined by representatives from the What? Centre and Mary Stevens Hospice. The Mayor and other guests visited the various stalls, chatting about the work they do in the local area and the type of support they offer.
