Voluntary Opportunities with Beacon

Lifestyle Volunteer
Based at our centre in Stourbridge, the purpose of this role is to provide assistance to staff in delivering a varied programme of social and leisure activities in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, helping to support the visually impaired people who visit the centre. Hours available: 10am – 3pm, Tuesday and/or Thursday. An enhanced DBS check and two references will be required.

Telephone Befrienders
We are looking for more Telephone Befrienders to provide telephone support to lonely and isolated people living within the local area. This will involve making weekly phone calls to offer a listening ear and social contact, keeping a log of phone calls and brief details of conversations. Telephone befriending volunteers must be able to make calls from their own devices that incur no cost to them (unlimited minutes, free landline calls etc). No experience is needed, however a polite, friendly and empathetic manner is essential. An enhanced DBS check will also be required which Beacon will arrange.

Talking News volunteer
Our Talking News team need a little bit more support to ensure we are able to reach our members each week. We are looking for a volunteer who is able to come in to the centre on a Wednesday morning each week for maximum 2 hours to coordinate copying CDs (for around 100 people), and then sending them out.

Bowling Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to support our visually impaired and blind bowlers who are part of the National Ten Pin Bowling League. Bowlers visit Hollywood Ten Pin Bowling Alley (Wednesfield) on selected Thursday afternoons to play games within their teams of 4 in order to rack up points to reach the National Ten Pin Bowling Finals against other VI teams across the country. Volunteers will support bowlers by guiding them to the lanes, help with positioning, tell bowlers about pin position, order of play and ongoing scores.

Tandem Pilot Volunteer
Volunteers will support our visually impaired and blind cyclists who take part in our Tandem cycling group, supporting cyclists as pilots as well as guiding them to the Cafe afterwards. Tandem cycling takes place from Halfpenny Green Airport car park on a Monday or Friday, depending on members and the weather.

Collection Box Volunteers
A new opportunity has become available volunteering within our successful Income Generation team for collection box volunteers. Suitable for one or more volunteers, the role requires a full driving licence and can be flexible with days and hours. You will be required to collect the contents of Beacon branded collection boxes from shops, newsagents, pubs and restaurants, in and around the Wolverhampton, Dudley and Stourbridge areas. Collection boxes have always been an important source of fundraising for the Beacon Centre and we need help collecting the donations now more than ever.

Shop volunteers—Sedgley, Bilston, Bloxwich, Cannock, Penkridge, Wolverhampton Clearance Centre, Halesowen
Volunteering in one of our shops is an opportunity to learn and develop in retail, work as part of a great team and support Beacon at the same time. Tasks will involve arranging window displays, shelves and rails, serving customers on the till, maintaining the tidiness of the shop and steaming and pricing clothing. Volunteers will also receive certificated training.

Drivers Mate
We are looking for Drivers Mates for our retail team, to support the van driver with the collection of donated items of stock and to also help with the delivery of purchased items. Support also needed with the loading and unloading of the van with donated stock and delivery of furniture.
