OPP OF THE DAY: Volunteer Youth Worker, All STARS

As a volunteer youth worker, you’ll need to:

– assess the needs of young people, and plan and deliver programmes;

-run arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, residential activities, outdoor education and sporting activities;

-attend and take the lead on virtual sessions via Microsoft Teams or Zoom (due to COVID-19)

-befriend and support young people in different settings;

-mentor, coach and support individuals and encourage greater social inclusion;

-work in partnership with professionals from other organisations that support young people such as social care, health, police, education, youth offending teams and local authorities;

-attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and local policy developments;

-undertake administrative tasks, maintain effective recording systems and respond to queries;

-work with parents and community groups to win support for improved provision and act as an advocate for young people’s interests

Knowledge/Qualifications:
Youth Work NVQ level 2 or above (Desirable)
First Aid at Work Qualification (Desirable)
Willingness to undertake training (Essential)
A good knowledge of the issues facing young people in society today (Essential)
A basic level of awareness of health and safety and child protection issues and how to ensure good practice (Desirable)

Skills and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills and an ability to relate to young people in a variety of settings (Essential)
Ability to understand, respect and value young people’s views (Essential)
Excellent interpersonal skills (Essential)
Ability to work using own initiative (Essential)
An ability to set and work to own targets (Essential)
An ability to plan and implement exciting and imaginative programme of youth work activities (Essential)
Any other skills, interests, expertise and qualifications that may be used in a youth work setting (music, art, crafts, sports, outdoor activities, health awareness) (Desirable)

Experience:
Working with young people ages 11-25 in a youth work or similar setting. (Desirable)

This is a permanent, ongoing voluntary position.

We would like you to volunteer as many weeks as possible. However, the minimum would preferably be a fortnightly basis.

Expenses will be paid if a volunteer has purchased items for a youth club session i.e. cooking ingredients, arts & crafts.
