Volunteering Matters uses the unique power of volunteering to bring people together and build stronger more resilient communities across the UK. People-led and impact driven, we’re a national charity that is deeply embedded in local areas across the UK.
On behalf of The Department of Transport, Volunteering Matters are coordinating a nationwide volunteering programme called Journey Makers, to assist travellers at transport hubs as lockdown restrictions begin to ease.

• Do you want to be the friendly face for people commuting after being in lockdown?
The Volunteer Role:
The main role of a Journey Maker will be to provide support and guidance for the public at participating transport hubs across the UK and providing a welcome environment for people returning to work. The participating transport hubs could include major interchanges, train stations, trams, bus stations or undergrounds. All volunteers will be provided with training, face coverings and a HiViz jacket.
Volunteers WILL be:
• Based outside of the station or, to the side of passengers at the Bus Hub.
• Welcoming passengers to the station or bus hub
• Supporting passenger flow in and out of stations and bus hubs
• Encouraging passengers to use face coverings (in line with government advice)
Providing clear and concise verbal instructions to people using the transport hub
• Reassuring anxious passengers and one-time travellers/new passengers
• Fully supported and safeguarded by the transport hub and a volunteer liaison
• Wearing face coverings and a high-visibility bright pink volunteer vest
• Reassured by receiving virtual training and an induction before you start
Volunteers WILL NOT be:
• Fulfilling any aspect of an employee’s role
• Helping support passengers inside the station or, transport. Answering any questions about times and schedules. Just face coverings and distancing for safety.
• Expected to know timetable information
• Asked to compromise their safety
Skills and Attributes:
• The ability to confidently communicate with commuters
• The ability to show enthusiasm and have a sense of humour
• Flexibility and resilience
• Be fit and healthy
The project is running for six weeks initially, you will be included on a rota with times and locations agreed with you in advance.
