OPP OF THE DAY: Side By Side Volunteer, Alzheimer’s Society

Side by Side is an Alzheimer’s Society service which helps people with dementia to do the things they love with the support of a volunteer. The extra support can make it easier for people with dementia – who might sometimes feel isolated or find it difficult to leave their own home – remain active and feel part of their local community.

Side by Side volunteers provide agreed support to people with dementia which could include supporting a person with dementia go to their local park, making a weekly phone call, doing a crossword with someone who is in hospital, going to the cinema, pick up an old hobby or try a new leisure activity.

The service is operating across Worcestershire and South Dudley (Brierley Hill, Halesowen and Stourbridge.) so you can volunteer in a location that is convenient to you.

Skills:
Want to support, enable and empower people with dementia.
Good verbal communicator with great listening skills, especially face to face.
Happy to volunteer on your own and keeping in touch with your team.
Can provide a committed, flexible approach and are willing to learn.

A level of commitment is expected e.g 1+ hour(s) per week from you to support a person with dementia. this could be throughout the day or you could call someone at a weekend or an evening.

For this service there is a minimum of six months commitment once relevant checks have taken place.
