OPP OF THE DAY: Citizen Advocate, POhWER

Citizen Advocacy is an opportunity for people to volunteer and support other people who due to disability or are disadvantaged and find it difficult to get information, speak up and get their voice heard. Citizen advocates help to empower people so that they have a say and are involved in shaping their own lives. Citizen Advocates may have a lived experience of using advocacy services and offer support to clients on a wide range of issues, supported by qualified and trained advocates.

To provide prompt access to lower level advocacy support for people as discussed and agreed with the local manager.

Skills:
– Be willing to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS formerly CRB) check. All outcomes of DBS Checks will be reviewed against POhWER’s statement for Recruitment of Ex offenders.
– Comply with all relevant POhWER Policies, Procedures and Processes.
– Be eighteen years old or over.
– Live in the area and/or be willing to travel
– Be available to volunteer four or more hours a week between Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding travel)
– Have a reasonable standard of written and oral English
– Basic IT skills (there may be exceptions, but it is a strong preference)
– Have an understanding and experience of health and social care services
– Have good communication and listening skills
– Respect and value people and treat people as individuals
– Able to ask sensitive questions to make sure you understand the issue fully
– Willing to commit to further training and development
– Work within all relevant POhWER policies and procedures, especially our confidentiality
policy
– Be able to ask for help and support when needed
