The Citizens Advice Witness Service provides practical and emotional support and information to Victims and Witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court.

Witness Service Outreach Volunteer
The role is Outreach based and will involve meeting witnesses away from the court environment, either at their home or other agreed safe place, to assess their needs and provide support, together with the witness, and where appropriate their carer/support worker/parent/guardian, develop a tailored plan of preparation and support, that will help to reduce their anxiety and trauma enabling them to give their best evidence at court, training provided.

Witness Service volunteers need to have a caring, mature, supportive and empathetic manner towards others. You need to be friendly and approachable with good listening and verbal communication skills.

A non-judgemental, impartial and confidential approach to supporting others is essential.

Volunteers need to have respect for the diversity of all people, which includes commitment to the service’s objective of ensuring equal access is offered to all witnesses and and their supporters. Volunteers need to be committed, trustworthy, discreet and prepared to adhere to Citizens Advice Witness Service standards to ensure we deliver a high standard of service to our witnesses and victims.

Whilst not essential, this role would suit someone with experience of supporting vulnerable people such as children and young people, people with learning difficulties and /or mental health issues.

Practical considerations
To be a Witness Service volunteer you need to:
– be aged 18 or over
– have at least basic IT skills
– be able to commit to a four day training programme which will be followed by an accreditation process.
